Mental Health - and why we decided to make a bracelet dedicated to this important cause.

Our jewelry is the physical manifestation of resilience and power.  Tenacious jewelry represents your inner phoenix that has risen from the ashes of life. Intentionally crafted and often adorned with heartfelt phrases and uplifting reminders, our pieces are meant to inspire greatness.

My degree may be in Criminal Justice, however it led me through a career path that was essentially connected to clients that experienced mental health challenges. AS the eldest of 4 siblings, looking out for others has always been my disposition, and being a blessing to others was my main purpose throughout my career.

I was positioned in a challenging role that involved different experiences with mental health on multiple levels.  The occasion that stands out most involved a staff member of mine who I also consider to be a dear friend.  She called me one evening during a bad storm but I missed her call.  When I saw her at work the next day, she told me that she tried to reach me the previous night but she didn't leave a message.

WE agreed to talk later on that evening but neither of us got around to it.  I set aside a few minutes to meet with her the following morning.  That moment never came because she committed suicide the night before. Although we were close friends, I had no idea that she was facing mental health challenges.

After discovering this devastating news, I was forced to "hold it together" so that I could make all of the proper notifications and console my other staff members. Then, as a single mom, I had to go home and "hold it together" for my children.

The demands of my life and my job mandated psychological suppression and I had no idea util years later when I went on interview for another promotion.  After weeks of studying, mock interviews and preparations, I felt that I was prepared so I walked into that interview with confidence!  The panel asked me to describe steps that I had to take to contain an emergency situation in my supervisory capacity. I immediately thought of my friend and had a breakdown right in front of the panel.

Due to the stigma attached to mental health, especially in the African American Community, I had never considered my own mental health! As mental health challenges are on the rise, I wanted to design a bracelet that could serve as a "silent voice" for those that are experiencing challenges, having a disconnected day or may just need a hug or prayer.

Sometimes people can't find the words to let others know that they are going through something.  Hopefully these bracelets will be a blessing to many women who are personally experiencing a mental health challenge or who may have a child or spouse going through these challenges.

As I think about what happened with Simone Biles and seeing what she went through I want my message to be that "It's ok to NOT be ok!"

Wearing this bracelet says "your words of encouragement are appreciated" "I'm having a challenging day, handle with sensitivity"

It's a reminder that you should:

1) never give up hope

2) self-love is priority

3) YOU hold the key to your happiness and

4) You are Tenacious and Resilient.

I wish that my friend had a silent voice.  A portion of the proceeds from this bracelet will be donated to The Suicide awareness foundation in her name
